Manufacturing sectors I know from the shop floor up

Every industry has its own operational grammar. The certification regime, the customer dynamic, the capital cycle, the supply base, the labour profile. An interim manager who has worked across multiple sectors can transfer lessons between them but only if they have genuinely operated in each. Below are the five industries where I bring direct, in-role experience.
Automotive
For Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers to global OEMs.
I have operated in the automotive supply base on both sides of the OEM relationship, leading Tier 1 plants directly and, as an interim, stepping in to launch, relocate or integrate supplier operations. Familiar with IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP and the reality of OEM audit regimes at VW, BMW, Stellantis, Ford, Toyota and their peers.
Typical mandates in this sector:
- Greenfield plant launches for suppliers entering CEE
- Line transfers between sites in response to customer sourcing decisions
- Integrations of acquired suppliers into Tier 1 groups
- Turnaround of underperforming supplier operations
Aerospace
For aerospace component and assembly manufacturers.
Aerospace manufacturing operates on longer cycles, tighter certification regimes and more conservative change management than most sectors. I have led operations under AS9100, CQI9 and customer-specific requirements from Airbus, Boeing and their Tier 1 suppliers. Familiar with FAI processes, configuration management and the commercial dynamics of long-cycle aerospace contracts.
Typical mandates in this sector:
- Relocations of production into lower-cost EU jurisdictions
- Capacity expansions for programme ramp-ups
- Integration of acquired aerospace suppliers
- Qualification projects for new customer programmes
FMCG
For food, beverage and consumer goods manufacturers.
FMCG manufacturing is the opposite rhythm from aerospace short cycles, high volumes, seasonal peaks, private label complexity and retailer-driven service requirements. I have operated in FMCG plants running under BRC, IFS and retailer audits, with the commercial pressure of major grocery chains as anchor customers.
Typical mandates in this sector:
- Greenfield or brownfield capacity expansion in CEE
- Post-acquisition integration for PE-backed FMCG platforms
- Line transfers in portfolio rationalisations
- Productivity and service-level recovery programmes
Plastic Packaging
For rigid and flexible plastic packaging manufacturers serving FMCG and industrial customers.
Plastic packaging operates at the intersection of high-volume manufacturing and tight regulatory scrutiny. Food-contact compliance, BRC and ISO 22000 certification, and increasingly demanding sustainability requirements under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) define the sector. I have led operations producing injection-moulded, blow-moulded and thermoformed packaging for anchor customers across food, beverage, personal care and industrial segments, where cost discipline, service reliability and recyclability performance determine contract renewal.
Typical mandates in this sector:
- Greenfield or capacity expansion projects for packaging producers serving FMCG customers
- Line transfers and footprint consolidation following acquisitions or portfolio reviews
- Integration of acquired packaging operations into larger groups
- Productivity, scrap reduction and sustainability transition programmes
Heavy Industry
For metal, machinery and industrial equipment manufacturers.
Heavy industry operates on capital-intensive, long-lead-time cycles with specialised supply bases and complex health, safety and environmental requirements. I have led operations in this sector through major transitions capacity expansions, modernisation programmes and plant closures.
Typical mandates in this sector:
- Plant modernisation and automation programmes
- Closures and relocations of legacy European operations
- Integration of acquired heavy-industry platforms
